Hoop earrings — types, sizes and production

Hoop earrings are one of the most timeless and best-selling shapes in jewelry. We explain the types of hoops, clasps, sizes and profiles, and what to settle before ordering hoops under your own brand.

Types of hoop earrings

The word “hoops” covers several variants. Classic hoops are round loops of constant or varying thickness. Huggies are small hoops that hug the earlobe closely, very popular in everyday jewelry. There are also oval, square, flattened (flat-profile), twisted hoops and hoops set with cubic zirconia along the outer edge. Each variant has a different character and weight, which translates into the metal cost — a key component of an earring’s price.

Hoop clasps

The clasp type determines comfort and security. The most common are: a snap (click, self-closing — comfortable and secure), a post that slides into the other side of the hoop (classic, minimalist) and a hinge with a lock. For huggies a snap mechanism is often used. The clasp should be considered at the design stage, because it affects wearing comfort, perceived quality and complaints — a poorly chosen mechanism is the most common reason for earring returns.

Sizes and profiles

Hoop size is given as the inner or outer diameter in millimetres — from a few millimetres (huggie) to large 40–60 mm hoops and bigger. The wire profile (thickness) decides whether a hoop is delicate or bold, and its weight. Hoops can be solid or hollow — hollow ones are lighter and cheaper in metal while keeping a large size. Setting the diameter, profile and whether the hoop is solid or hollow is the basis of pricing and series repeatability.

Material, finish and nickel standard

We make hoop earrings most often in 925 silver and gold, with the option of rhodium plating (whiteness, tarnish protection), gold plating or a vermeil finish. Because hoops have direct, prolonged skin contact (and the post with the ear), the material must meet the EU nickel-release standard — which is why 925 silver, gold and titanium are the safe choice here. The finish (polish, satin, diamond-cut) is matched to the brand’s style. Hoops with cubic zirconia additionally require precise stone setting.

How to order hoops under your own brand

We produce hoops under the client’s brand in the private label model. Just specify the hoop and clasp type, diameter and profile, metal, finish and any stones. A 3D model and sample are made, which you approve before the run. Hoop earrings are one of the categories we run as an earring manufacturer — from single designs to series for wholesale and shops. Send references and we will prepare a quote split into metal, stones and labour.

Frequently asked questions

How do huggie earrings differ from regular hoops?

Huggies are small hoops of small diameter that hug the earlobe closely. Regular hoops are larger and hang more loosely. Huggies are comfortable for everyday wear and for multi-piercing.

Can hoops be light despite a large size?

Yes — hollow hoops are used, which at a large diameter weigh much less than solid ones and are cheaper in metal, while keeping a striking look and comfort.

Are hoop earrings safe for people with allergies?

Yes, if made of 925 silver, gold or titanium — these materials meet the EU nickel-release standard. It is best to avoid cheap alloys, the most common cause of irritation.
