Titanium anodizing — jewelry colours without coatings

Titanium can take on intense colours — from gold through blue to violet — without any paint or coating. This is due to anodizing, a process based on light interference. We explain how it works, how durable the colours are and why it is a competence most workshops lack.

What titanium anodizing is

Anodizing is an electrochemical process in which a thin, transparent oxide layer grows on the titanium surface. The thickness of this layer depends on the applied voltage — and it is what determines the colour. The colour comes from no dye or coating, but from the phenomenon of light interference on the oxide layer, much like a rainbow on an oil slick. That is why anodized titanium keeps its natural, metallic character, and the colour is fused into the metal rather than laid on top.

What colours can be achieved

By changing the voltage you get a predictable palette: from straw and gold, through purple, deep navy and blues, to turquoise, green and violet. You can also create tonal gradients and patterns by anodizing selected areas. The colours are saturated and unique to titanium — they cannot be achieved in silver or gold. For brands it is a way to a distinctive, “technological” aesthetic. Note that the shade depends on the exact voltage and surface preparation, so for series the repeatability of the process is crucial.

Durability and care

The oxide layer is hard and chemically stable, so the colour does not fade from light or water and does not peel like paint. It can, however, be scratched or worn away by deep abrasion, because it is very thin — a scratched area loses its colour locally. That is why anodizing works best on surfaces less exposed to friction and in pieces where the colour is an element of the design rather than the whole surface of a ring worn daily. Care is simple: water, mild detergent, a soft cloth; no abrasive pastes.

Anodizing vs plating and other finishes

Anodizing is sometimes confused with electroplating, but it is a different mechanism. Plating lays a layer of another metal (gold, rhodium) on the surface; anodizing adds no material, it only builds up titanium’s own oxide layer and changes how it reflects light. That is why an anodized colour cannot be “worn down to another metal” — underneath is always the same titanium. Other valve metals (e.g. niobium) can also be anodized, which widens the palette. The choice between anodizing and plating depends on the effect the brand wants.
