How to care for silver jewelry so it does not tarnish

925 sterling silver naturally reacts with sulphur in the air, cosmetics and sweat — forming a dark film (silver sulphide). This is natural, not a fault. The rate depends on humidity, skin contact and cosmetics. Rhodium-plated jewelry tarnishes far more slowly, as the rhodium layer isolates the silver.

Keep silver in a dry place, ideally in a sealable zip bag or a lined box, away from moisture, radiators and windows. Store each item separately to avoid scratches. An anti-moisture sachet helps. Take jewelry off before bathing, the pool, cleaning and sleep.

Put jewelry on last — after perfume, cream and make-up, as cosmetics speed up tarnishing. After wear, wipe it with a soft cloth to remove sweat and grease. Avoid chlorine (pool) and cleaning agents that can damage coatings and stones.

For routine cleaning use a silver cloth or lukewarm water with mild soap and a soft brush, then dry thoroughly. A popular anti-tarnish method is aluminium foil with baking soda and hot water, but do not use it on rhodium-plated, oxidised or stone-set jewelry — it can damage the coating or setting.
