Rhodium or gold plating — which coating to choose

The electroplated coating determines the colour and durability of jewelry. Here is how to choose between rhodium and gold plating.

What rhodium plating is

Rhodium plating applies a thin layer of rhodium (a platinum-group metal) onto silver or white gold by electroplating. Rhodium is hard, corrosion-resistant and has a bright, white shine. The coating protects silver from tarnish and gives a durable, mirror-like look — which is why rhodium is standard in white jewelry.

What gold plating is

Gold plating is a coating of gold over another metal. When the base is 925 silver, it is called vermeil (gold-plated silver). Gold plating gives a warm gold colour at a lower cost than solid gold. Thickness and gold fineness are matched to the use — from a thin decorative layer to a thicker, more wear-resistant one.

Rhodium vs gold plating — differences

Rhodium gives a white/silvery colour and protects against tarnish; gold plating gives a gold colour and raises visual value. Rhodium is harder and more wear-resistant than gold. The choice depends on the collection's aesthetic: white jewelry → rhodium, warm accent → gold plating. Both are applied by electroplating.

Durability and coating thickness

Durability depends on coating thickness and how it is worn. Thinner decorative coatings wear off faster on edges; thicker ones last longer. Contact with cosmetics, sweat and friction shortens their life. The coating can be refreshed at the manufacturer — a normal part of jewelry service.

What to choose for your brand

For a white, minimalist line choose rhodium-plated silver; for a warm, gold look — vermeil. Many brands offer both variants of the same design. You set thicknesses and colours when ordering silver jewelry or private label.

Summary

Rhodium = white colour + tarnish protection; gold plating = warm gold colour. Both are electroplated, and their durability depends on thickness and care. In contract manufacturing, coating choice is part of the collection specification.
