Titanium products — properties, uses and production

Titanium combines traits no precious metal has. It is very light (about half the weight of steel at similar strength), exceptionally resistant to corrosion and scratches, and biocompatible — that is, hypoallergenic. In jewelry, titanium is most often chosen for wedding bands and rings — light, strong and ideal for people who work with their hands. Bracelets, cufflinks, pendants, earrings (especially posts for allergy sufferers) and modern, colourful anodized designs are also popular. Beyond jewelry, titanium is used for accessories: keyrings, tags, eyewear parts. The common denominator is the lightness and durability that suit pieces worn intensively and daily.

Titanium appeals to several clear audiences. Allergy sufferers and people with sensitive skin appreciate that it is hypoallergenic and nickel-free. The active and athletes — that it is light and virtually indestructible. Men often choose titanium for wedding bands and jewelry with a modern, “technical” character. Premium and design brands reach for anodizing colours unattainable in silver or gold. As a result, titanium opens segments that classic silver and gold jewelry does not reach.

Titanium is hard and needs different processing than precious metals — instead of classic casting, it mostly uses machining from solid (CNC), laser cutting and welding, and precise finishing. Colour comes from voltage-controlled anodizing. It is an advanced technology most workshops lack — which is why the quality of titanium work varies widely. The choice of thickness, tolerances and joining method is set at the design stage, and the repeatability of the anodizing colour is crucial for series.
