Anodized titanium jewelry — colours, durability, who for

The colour of anodized titanium is pure physics, not dye chemistry. In an electrochemical process a thin, transparent oxide layer grows on the metal surface, and its thickness depends on the applied voltage. Light reflects from the two boundaries of this layer and interferes — exactly like a rainbow on an oil slick — producing colour. Changing the voltage by a few volts moves us from gold, through purple and navy, to blue, turquoise and violet. The colour is thus fused into the metal rather than laid on top. Anodizing gives a predictable, repeatable palette: straw and gold (low voltages), purple and violet, deep navy, cobalt and blue, up to turquoise and green at higher voltages. You can also create tonal gradients (ombré) and patterns by anodizing only selected areas with masking. The effect is metallic and deep — unlike matte paint. For a brand it is a chance for a collection with a distinct, "technological" identity that cannot be reproduced in silver or gold. The shade depends on the exact voltage and surface preparation, so for series the repeatability of the process is crucial.

The oxide layer is hard and chemically stable, so the colour does not fade from light, water, sweat or cosmetics and does not peel off like lacquer. It has one limitation: it is very thin, so a deep scratch can locally rub it away, revealing the natural, silvery-grey titanium. That is why anodizing works best on surfaces less exposed to friction and where the colour is an element of the design rather than the whole surface of a ring worn daily. If needed, the colour can be renewed by anodizing the piece again.
