How to care for titanium jewelry — care and cleaning

Good news: titanium is chemically inert, so it does not tarnish like silver and needs no pastes or anti-corrosion dips. To clean it, warm water with a drop of mild soap, a soft brush for hard-to-reach spots and drying with a soft cloth are enough. That is entirely sufficient to restore the shine. Titanium easily withstands water and sweat, but like any jewelry it is better removed for work with chemicals and cosmetics that can build up on the surface.

Titanium is hard, but over years of wear fine surface scratches are a natural course of things — especially on a polished finish. Shallow scratches on a solid-titanium piece can be removed by re-matting or polishing at a jeweller, because the colour is "in the metal", not in a coating. A matte, brushed finish hides fine scratches better than a mirror polish, which is why satin is often chosen for pieces meant for heavy wear. Deeper damage is best shown to the manufacturer or a jeweller.

Coloured, anodized titanium needs a little more attention, because the coloured oxide layer is very thin. Clean it only gently — water, mild soap, a soft cloth — and avoid abrasive pastes and rough sponges that can scrape the colour. Do not use ultrasonic baths or aggressive agents. A deep scratch can locally rub the colour down to natural titanium; if needed, the colour can be renewed by re-anodizing at the manufacturer.

Titanium is tough, but hard stones and other metals can scratch it, so it is best stored separately — in a pouch or a box compartment. There is no need to protect it from moisture like silver, because it does not corrode. One practical thing about titanium rings is worth remembering: in a medical emergency they can be removed, though it requires special tools — it is a myth that "they cannot be cut off".
