Custom earring manufacturing — what to settle before the first batch

Custom earring manufacturing differs from a ring or a pendant in one detail: the piece has direct, hours-long contact with pierced skin, comes in a pair, and must sit on the ear without dragging. Those three conditions define the construction, material and tolerances — not the beauty of the render.

Brands that come to us with a finished design usually have a refined shape and an unconsidered fitting. That is why we start the first conversation with mechanics, not with the pattern.

The fitting is a structural decision, not a decorative one. A post with a standard butterfly back works for small, light designs and is the cheapest to assemble. A closed hook feels safer on pricier earrings and heavier drops. A lever back holds large designs securely but requires precise soldering and raises labour cost. Hoops and huggies have their own hinge geometry and the longest preparation time.

A practical rule: the higher the mass and the lower its centre of gravity, the more closed the fitting should be. A post with a heavy drop is the most common cause of returns in this category.

Earrings are the one jewelry category where European nickel-release rules (REACH, Annex XVII) treat the item more strictly than the rest of the range — they also cover parts inserted into a pierced ear. In practice, declare the material of the post and the hook up front, not only of the body.

Three-dimensional forms, textures and stone-set designs go through vacuum casting — 3D model, rubber mould, waxes, casting, finishing. This route gives full freedom of shape and pays off from a few dozen pieces up.

Simple hoops and minimalist lines come out cheaper from wire and sheet: bending, soldering, polishing. No mould, no model cost — but also none of the detail wire cannot carry. The choice between the two routes shifts the unit price by tens of percent, so it is made before CAD, not after.

An earring sells as a pair, so we do not check one piece but the agreement between two. In practice three parameters are set: nominal weight with tolerance, the permitted weight difference within a pair, and mirroring where the design is not symmetrical.

On earrings the plating works harder than elsewhere — contact with sweat, cosmetics and perfume is daily. Rhodium plating on silver slows tarnishing and raises resistance; gold plating gives colour but needs an agreed layer thickness. Earrings are counted in pairs, not pieces — the first thing worth clarifying in an enquiry, because it doubles the quote. We split the price into metal cost (driven by the market rate and weight) and labour including fitting assembly, which on earrings is noticeably higher than on a pendant of similar weight.

The schedule is standard: model and prototype, approval, mould, batch. Realistic ranges per stage are gathered in our piece on production lead times. If you plan a permanent line, earrings work well as an entry into private label — low metal mass means a lower entry threshold than rings.
